It’s the Soul That Matters to God

Psalm 19:7

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

The law of the Lord in this text is not representing the Law of Moses or the Ten Commandments, but the word of God as an entire whole; the good and perfect will of God. The reason we can infer this is because of the following words: converting the soul. The Law of Moses was unable to convert the soul because the law was not perfect; yet, the word of God is perfect. The Law of Moses was not able to save souls, neither was it able to justify them; yet, the word of God offers salvation. The man who was sent by God in the form of a humble servant to redeem mankind and justify all who believe from all things (Acts 13:38-39) was Jesus Christ, who was also the word of God (John 1:1, 14) and therefore the perfect offering of love that overcame sin and death (Hebrews 10:14). Through the perfect offering, we are now given access to salvation through our faith (2 Timothy 3:15).

The word of God, or doctrine, transforms us through rebirth in the spirit from corruptible to incorruptible; additionally, the focus of the transformation is not geared towards our natural bodies or our physical circumstances, but rather is centered on our spiritual bodies, our souls, which will live forever (1 Peter 1:23). Based on this foundation, it is imperative that believers are frequently reminded that God desires to clean out our hearts, not our physical lives, so that his spirit might live in us. It can be burdensome and frustrating at times, when we appear to be suffering from financial hardships or experience trials in our physical life, yet the soul is what matters to God; the numbers in your bank account do not dictate your salvation, the clothes in your closet do not govern the freedom of your soul.

It is through the frequent renewal of our minds that we are transformed by the word of God, meditating on his perfect will and plan of redemption, rather than our own lives, wants, or needs according to this world (Romans 12:1-2). We, as believers, need to refocus our minds constantly on God, and not be carried away by the cares of this world; in allowing the burdens of living in this world to infiltrate our minds, we have given them power to overtake us and steer us away from the promise of salvation given to us by God.

The testimony, or evidence and proof provided by the existence, of God is sure; God is who He is and does not change, His character remains the same, His word remains consistent, there is no fault in Him. The scriptures throughout the bible will always support each other; there are no errors or deceit in God’s word. In knowing this, we can have confidence in his testimony. Additionally, knowledge of this grants the humble access to His wisdom. Before honor comes humility, and through reverence to God, can we gain wisdom of his word (Proverbs 15:33).
