After God’s own heart

What does it really mean to have the heart of God? If we are to be as Christ what is love and who should we love? Greater, does my character dictate the response of my heart? We will examine the heart of God found in His servant the man David. Biblically David is a prophetic example of our life in Christ. Yes, he was all that and more but there were several things that defined his character in relation to the heart of God. “After God’s own heart”

The word heart by definition suggests…>“The Bible uses the word “heart” primarily to refer to the ruling center of the whole person, the spring of all desires. … The heart is the “home of the personal life,” and hence a man is designated, according to his heart, wise (1 Kings 3:12, etc.), pure (Ps. 24:4; Matt” – nothing means more than God’s word

I’ve learned, one can go to church, give great offerings, be a great help and not process the heart of God. The heart of God is realities to His word, in other words,” the word of God is not the spring of all desires.”

In other words, who and what we are are not our words, it’s the reaction of Gods word/our heart.

The Apostle Paul states it like this –

1 Corinthians 13 King James Version (KJV)

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

None of this matters if your life is not a reflection of God’s heart! The heart will be test – the response will speak your character –

Please consider David’s statement in the context of our definition.

Psalm 119:11 King James Version (KJV)

11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. David’s life is not characterized by what someone has done or did, it is simply the spring of all his desires. “I want to Love like God.”

Job 23:12 KJV “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.”

Loving God is everyday

Next to Jesus, the Scriptures cover more of David’s life than any other man. David, Israel’s greatest king, is one of the most amazing men who ever lived. He is known as being a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22) yet his life is filled with similar ups and downs.

David as a persons shows none of the characteristics of being like Christ thus how is he a man after God’s own heart?

As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed-the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were” (Romans 4:17)

David’s life and his call were being aligned by the word of God.

You for the heart of God contributes to how and when your destiny lines up with your faithfulness. Stop listening to the enemy and hear your heart, the word of God.

Your heart has to be tested to make sure it can pass the stress test – your heart will be tested

Why do an exercise stress test?

An exercise stress test is primarily used to help your doctor determine if your heart receives enough oxygen and proper blood flow when it needs it most, such as when you are exercising.

It can be ordered for people who have been experiencing chest pains or other symptoms of coronary heart disease (also called coronary artery disease).

An exercise stress test may also be used to help determine your level of health, especially if you are starting a new exercise program. This allows your doctor to learn what level of exercise you can safely handle.

David’s Heart was tested the first time –

  • David’s own Son Absalom sought to take his father’s life.
  • To make matter worst to show his fathers Kingdom who was in charge he took all his fathers concubine and went into all of them before the people making himself through his ungodly behavior king
  • Because of his pain and abandonment/rejection of David, Absalom becomes and an easy target for Satan’s influence

David’s Heart was tested a second time –

  • David most trust adviser and the counselor would use the brokenness to betray David for his behavior with Bathsheba and her husband Uriah things – betrayal is always enteral next external –

Psalm 55:12-15 KJV

12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

A man named Ahitophel is also mentioned in 2 Samuel 23:34, and he is said to be the father of Eliam. Since 2 Samuel 11:3 notes that Eliam is the father of Bathsheba, some scholars suggest that the Ahitophel of 2 Samuel 15 may in fact be Bathsheba’s grandfather.

2 Samuel 17 King James Version (KJV)

17 Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

2 And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee, and I will smite the king only:

3 And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.

David’s Heart is tested a 3rd time –

  • The enemy when he sees the confusion now feels as though, he can have a turn

2 Samuel 16 KJV

6 And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

7 And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial:

8 The Lord hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the Lord hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man.

9 Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.

10 And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?

11 And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the Lord hath bidden him.

How many reading this blog seeing all that the King went through for the Kingdom would say – “Let him alone.”

We are looking at David a man after God’s own heart.

Therefore, allow me to close with the enemy who, curse, kick dust, and threw rocks at the king. When you have God’s heart don’t fight the enemy – Love then. Here’s David as an example –

15 So the king returned and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.

16 And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.

19 And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

20 For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed?

22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

23 Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

David life is fugitive of the cross – two thieves – Absalom and Ahitophel both died by hanging – Shimei was guilty of death but found favor the love of God in the King’s heart. “After Gods own heart” now I understand
