God’s promise of Resurrection

God’s promises are something He always keeps. It’s in the Bible, Psalm 89:34. “No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back one word of what I said.”

The Resurrection is a reason to be excited.

The promises of God are yes and amen. It’s in the Bible, 2 Corinthians 1:20. “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”

The Bible promises that the dead will live again. It’s in the Bible, John 5:28-29. “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.”

Jesus has promised that He will come again. It’s in the Bible, John 14:2-3. “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

God promises that the dead will be raised again. It’s in the Bible, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18. “For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

Go with me to the tomb of Jesus. The coming understanding creates the cause and effect stating he will rise and one day return for His bride.

The detail of the folded napkin is found in the account of Jesus’ resurrection in John 20:7, “And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself” (KJV). Different respected translations of the Bible handle this verse differently. Three of them translate the verse with the word napkin (KJV, AS, RSV). Others translate it with “burial cloth” (NIV), “handkerchief” (NKJV), or “face-cloth” (NASB). The Greek word is saudarion, which comes from a Latin word for “sweat.” It can refer to a towel for wiping sweat from one’s face. It is used in the Greek to denote a towel or cloth, but not specifically a table napkin.

The other key word is folded. Was the burial cloth or napkin left folded in the tomb? Two of the translations use the word folded (NIV, NKJV). Others translate the word as “rolled up” (NASB, ASV, RSV) or “wrapped together” (KJV). The Greek word is entulisso, which is from words that may mean “to twist” or “to entwine.” The bottom line is that there is no agreement that it was a table napkin and no agreement that it was neatly folded in any meaningful way. The primary meaning of John 20:7 is that the cloth, which was placed over Jesus’ head or face at burial, was separate from the rest of His grave clothes. The significance of that, if there is any, is unknown.

It has been rumored that folding the napkin at the table is a Jewish custom that means the person folding the napkin intends to return.

Within the structure in ancient Europe, it is said if the master balls up his napkin and tosses it aside meaning he’s done and is not coming back you can remove His plate. If he folded his napkin and sat it aside neatly, this signified that he was not done and would return. Even though not a Jewish custom it speaks to the resurrection of our Lord and savior Jesus. He’s coming back…

The resurrection allows the believer to be changed into the image of Son. The new birth in John 3 KJV is our resurrection from death to life.

Four Proofs for the Resurrection

1 Jesus made numerous appearances after His death. He comforted the mourners outside His tomb, and Scripture records that Jesus was seen by more than 500 people at one time. Some may argue that a few people could have agreed to a deception, but the consistent and prolonged collaboration of 500 people seems unlikely.

2 The growth of the Christian church confirms the Resurrection. Peter, one of Jesus’ followers, spoke with a crowd after Jesus’ death and many believed. Acts 2:41 says, “There were added that day about three thousand souls” (English Standard Version). That group of believers multiplied into the hundreds of millions of believers worldwide today.

3 The Resurrection sets Christianity apart from any other religion. No other religious leader has conquered the power of death. Jesus did this to demonstrate His victory over the power of sin in the lives of people and give them the promise of eternal life.

4 Transformed lives throughout the centuries have testified to the Resurrection. The most conclusive proof for the Resurrection is that Jesus lives within believers today, empowering them to change their lives.

Therefore, 2 Corinthians 5:17 King James Version (KJV)

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
